Response & Transport
(Training Simulation: The individual shown is part of a training exercise and is not an actual patient.)
North Collier Fire Control and Rescue District provides emergency medical services through an integrated, tiered response system designed to deliver the right level of care as quickly and efficiently as possible. All firefighter personnel are cross-trained as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) or Paramedics and are credentialed at both the State and County levels, allowing care to begin immediately upon arrival. Our EMTs and Paramedics provide both Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS).
Basic Life Support (BLS)
Basic Life Support is provided by Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and is appropriate for non-life-threatening conditions or injuries.
BLS care can include:
-
Patient assessment and vital sign monitoring;
-
Oxygen therapy and basic airway support;
-
Bleeding control and wound care;
-
Splinting and spinal stabilization;
-
CPR and use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED); and/or
-
Assistance with prescribed medications, when permitted.
BLS responses commonly involve minor injuries, stable medical complaints, and other lower-acuity situations.
Advanced Life Support (ALS)
North Collier Fire Rescue has provided Advanced Life Support services since 2011. ALS care is delivered by Paramedics for serious or life-threatening emergencies requiring advanced assessment and intervention.
ALS care may include:
-
Advanced airway management;
-
Cardiac monitoring and defibrillation;
-
Intravenous (IV) and intraosseous (IO) access;
-
Administration of life-saving medications;
-
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); and/or
-
Management of severe trauma, respiratory distress, cardiac emergencies, stroke, and other critical conditions.
ALS responses typically involve high-acuity emergencies such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, cardiac arrest, stroke symptoms, and severe trauma.
Fire Engine Medical Response
Fire engine companies provide rapid response, scene safety, and initial medical care. In many cases, engine companies arrive first and begin patient assessment and treatment while additional resources are en route. This integrated model ensures lifesaving care begins immediately and provides a seamless transition to advanced care and transport when required.
Medic Rescue (Ambulance) Capabilities
Medic rescue units are specifically designed for patient transport and the delivery of advanced medical care. These ambulances allow EMS Rescue personnel to provide continuous treatment from the scene through arrival at the hospital.
The District operates multiple medic rescue units available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ensuring timely access to emergency medical care throughout the community.
Each unit is staffed by a highly trained EMS Rescue crew consisting of EMTs and Paramedics and is equipped with:
-
Patient stretcher and transport systems;
-
Advanced cardiac monitors;
-
Comprehensive airway management equipment;
-
IV and medication delivery systems; and
-
Medical documentation and hospital communication technology.
Transport to Medical Facilities
When patient transport is required, medic rescue units routinely transport patients to local acute care facilities, including:
- NCH North Naples Hospital; and
- Physicians Regional – Pine Ridge.
Final hospital destination decisions are based on the patient’s medical condition, the level of care required, hospital capabilities, and current facility capacity. In some cases, patients may be transported to other hospitals outside the immediate area to ensure they receive the most appropriate and timely care. When appropriate and feasible, patient preference is also considered in accordance with established medical protocols.
